Beets can be ensiled with maize or fed fresh

Fodder beets are a good supplement to livestock feed. Beets can be ensiled with corn or fed fresh. They are palatable, good for rumen fermentation, and increase the fat content of milk.

Cleaning fodder beets makes them more palatable and easier for cows to absorb. To prevent damage to the beets, the best method is to clean them just before feeding. This can be done with a beet cleaning machine or even easier with a beet cleaning/cutting machine where you do five jobs in one pass. The beets can be cleaned to a greater or lesser degree, depending on whether they are fed fresh or ensiled with maize. If they are fed fresh, defoliating and light cleaning is sufficient to prevent damage. Beets that are ensiled have to be cleaned more thoroughly, and, if necessary, cut. Irrespective of whether they are fed fresh or ensiled, ground tare on beets must be avoided as much as possible, because it has a negative impact on the energy value of the beets.

Ensiling fodder beet

Fodder beets can be stored in various ways; in a pile in the farmyard in the open air on hard surfacing, or in a large sleeve. Another option is ensiling with dry grass or silage maize. This can be done with a beetcutter. To prevent juices being lost and fermentation occurring during ensiling, a component with a high DM content and sufficient nutritional value is added, such as dry grass or silage maize. Mixed silage therefore consists of layers of grass or silage maize, alternated with layers of shredded beets. The juice from the beets is then retained in the silage by another crop. The sugars of ensiled fodder beets are converted into acids. Beets from the silage are well preserved, so they can be fed all year round. .
