A quality onion harvest requires attention

Depending on the variety, onions tend to be harvested in August or September. This harvesting takes place in 2 stages. First, the onions are harvested in the swath, then after a brief drying period they are loaded. Onions with dried haulm have a better shelf life.

Before the onions are harvested on the swath, the Holaras haulm topper removes the onion haulm mechanically. This saves a lot of work when lifting and tailing the onions.

The onion windrower picks up onions from the soil. The onions are treated to light shocks as they are transported over the bar conveyor of the harvester, which cleans them immediately. The onions are then placed undamaged in a swath on the land via a bunker or cross conveyor belt. After drying in the field, the onions can be loaded without any problems.

The drying continues in storage. Onions are sensitive to moisture, so it’s important to dry them. Onions that get wet or damp can spoil quickly. After drying, the sorting and processing begins. Part of this process involves removing the remaining haulm with the Holaras onion topper. The haulm is cut off without damaging the onions by a system of rapidly-rotating blades and a special vibration technique. The clean onions are then ready for consumption, and are sent for packaging.
